Some Jewish families met with hate messages at Morrison YMCA in Charlotte

YMCA directors said they contacted law enforcement about the situation.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hate messages on a bus at the Morrison YMCA left an agonizing sting for people like Brooklyn Doss.

“I was sad to see it,” said Doss.

Doss said hate not only sends a nasty message but is also a big reminder of the progress toward unity.

“As adults, we can process things a little differently, but when we are dealing with our kids that’s scary,” said Doss.

Doss said it all started after bringing their 10-year-old daughter to the Morrison YMCA for her Jewish Community Softball League when she was met with an unusual eye sore.

“This was done last night obviously someone knew they were going to be there and to me that presents a danger,” said Doss.

The words on the bus read "Save the white race." There were also swastika symbols painted on the bus.

“[My daughter] was very confused and that was really hard to try to explain,” Doss said.

"We are disheartened their property has been vandalized with hate speech and symbols," YMCA said in a statement. "We have contacted law enforcement, and our team is working to remove the graffiti as quickly as possible.“

While some families may agree it’s a step in the direction, some say the fear left behind continues to linger.

“I hope there is no further retaliation or crime to happen,” Doss said. “Thankfully no one was hurt this time, but they could be next time.”

The Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte also spoke out saying they will remain committed to working to fight against antisemitism and prevent incidents like this from happening in the future.
