MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — The RiverHawk Greenway at Tuckasegee Park in Mount Holly welcomes thousands of people every year. Now, the greenway has added some new security measures.
The city approved several surveillance cameras to be installed in the greenway after several safety concerns happened. City leaders said the cameras will complement other safety measures already in place.
The trails and the park are where Dolly Williams said she spends many days.
“We use [the park] weekly, if not more often,” Williams said. “My children have fished down here in the past. We enjoy walking.”
Williams said she is glad of the decision the city has taken to protect its residents.
Mount Holly city leaders approved $20,000 to buy and install five surveillance cameras throughout their greenways.
“I think they are a good addition to add another level of security,” Williams said.
The cameras have a live feed directly to the Mount Holly 911 center.
“It makes me more comfortable bringing my kids here, allowing my wife to bring my kids here,” a Mount Holly resident and father said. “So, I feel much more at ease bringing my kids here, along with 911 on standby considering what has happened in the past.”
City leaders say the cameras record when motion is detected. The live feed or recorded footage can be accessed at any time.
Williams said she has some safety measures of her own: “We always have our phones, walk in pairs and always keep an awareness of what is going on around us."
Mount Holly police officers will also patrol the greenway four times a day, giving comfort to those on the grounds.
Even with this, when you are in the greenway you do want to always be vigilant and be aware of your surroundings.
