Charlotte teen places 3rd in Scripps National Spelling Bee

Ananya Prassanna finished third in Scripps National Spelling Bee.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte native came close to winning the spelling bee on Thursday.

Ananya Prassanna, a Charlotte native and David Drive middle schooler finished third place in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

That is the highest finish ever for the Charlotte 13-year-old. Prassanna tied for 74th last year and for 49th the year before.

The last time someone from North Carolina won the bee was in 1970.
