NC DMV unveils new license design

The new license design for North Carolina will include the state’s flower, a salamander, a Colonial Spanish Mustang, and the rolling hills in the west.

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolinians will soon have a new look, feel, and sound for their driver's licenses.

The DMV is revamping the way driver licenses look, and they will be made of a "stronger" material. In short, when you tap your license on a desk or even drop it, it won't sound like plastic—it'll sound more like metal.

The DMV said it wants to make the licenses more secure and harder to replace. This is also the most secure ID ever in North Carolina.

"I am proud to announce the implementation of the most secure credential in our great state’s history,” said DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin. “Our new licenses and IDs will be among the most secure identifying documents in the world.”

The IDs will have over 50 security features to prevent and detect fraud.

Licenses go into production at the end of the week.

It's important to know that your driver's license with the old design will still be valid through its expiration date.
