CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you bought a Powerball ticket in Jackson County, North Carolina, you might want to check your pockets.
A $1 million winning ticket was purchased at a grocery store there, but no one has claimed it. It was one of only two $1 million prizes won in the country during Monday's drawing.
The Powerball jackpot hits $620 million on Saturday, making the prize worth $312 million in cash.
The rising prize comes just in time to brighten someone's holiday season.
“It has been a record-setting year for Powerball with four jackpots over half a billion dollars and we would love to finish the year off with a record-setting win here in North Carolina,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the NC Education Lottery, in a statement.
If no one wins the jackpot on Saturday, the next Powerball drawing will take place on Christmas Day.
According to the NC Lottery, the last Christmas Day jackpot win occurred 10 years ago in 2013 when a ticket sold in Missouri won $71.5 million.
Only three Powerball jackpots have ever been won on Christmas Day.
“Good luck to everyone going for the big prize on Saturday and happy holidays,” Michalko said.
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
