Nearly half a million gallons of wastewater spills into Steele Creek

Valve failure at a lift station caused the overflow in southwest Charlotte, officials said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — About 474,458 gallons of wastewater spilled into Steele Creek in southwest Charlotte, according to Charlotte Water.

The overflow happened near the 1400 block of Choate Circle on Monday.

A lift station valve failure caused the overflow, officials said.

“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” said Charlotte Water spokesperson Cam Coley, “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not breakdown in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”
