Mount Holly, N.C. (WCNC) - Gaston County EMS will place two new ambulances on the road, specifically designed to save lives and get the attention of drivers.
The two units, which cost more than $184,000 without equipment, have a color scheme of bright yellow and a darker hue of blue with white lettering.
EMS Chief Mark Lamphiear said the new colors allows the ambulances to pop out more in the landscape compared to the agency's older blue and white units.
"This will help us get seen better," Chief Lamphiear said.
In addition to the new colors, the ambulances come with two large sub-woofers for the sirens.
"Cars are more well-insulated now, and a lot of people are on the phone or listening to to the radio," Chief Lamphiear said. "Much like when you pull up at a stop light besides somebody whose stereo's going boom boom boom, this siren will put that same kind of sound and feeling."
He said these features target three of the five human senses, which is important as EMS departments throughout the Carolinas grapple with an increasing number of drivers who fail to yield to ambulances with lights and sirens.
The new ambulances will be placed on the road within the next two weeks.
