CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After a recent survey found most people in Mecklenburg County are not aware of where and what to recycle, County and City officials have kicked off a new recycling campaign.

The campaign's motive is to increase recycling of plastic bags and wraps and was announced at a local Harris Teeter grocery store.

The store is one of many retail stores that will now accept plastic bags and wraps for recycling in storefront bins.

"When plastic bags or wraps are put in curbside bins, it makes recycling more difficult, time-consuming and expensive, which winds up costing us all more money," said Mecklenburg County Chairman Trevor M. Fuller.

The items recycled will be created into products such as new grocery bags, benches and decking.

Retailers participating in the campaign will accept plastic bags, grocery bags, produce bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags and even zipper bags. They also accept plastic wraps from water bottle cases, diapers, bathroom tissue, paper towels, bubble wrap and shipping pillows.

Locals can learn where and what to recycle at RecycleTheWrap.com.

The campaign kicked off the campaign Tuesday. Residents can find the nearest participating retailer here.
