No charges for group seen pulling bear cubs from tree, posing for pictures

One bear cub is in a rehab site, while the second cub still hasn't been found.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The North Carolina Wildlife Commission gave an update on a viral incident involving bear cubs.

The commission said officers will not file charges against the people seen handling bear cubs and posing for photos with them.

"Officers with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission have investigated this incident, and, while dangerous and unfortunate, it appears to be an isolated event. It is unlawful in NC to capture and keep black bears," the commission said in part its latest update on Thursday.

In the video, the group is seen pulling two bear cubs from a tree in Asheville.

The Wildlife Commission said since the people immediately let go of the cubs, they did not commit a crime, and therefore, would not be charged with a crime.

Officers spoke with the people involved about the importance of leaving the animals alone in the future.

One of the bear cubs injured its paw and is now in a rehab facility.

"She appears to be in stable condition and has been placed with another orphaned cub rescued earlier this year," the commission said.

Wildlife officers never found the other cub. They hope the cub found its mother on its own.

"We hope the media attention this incident has received will re-emphasize the importance of following the BearWise® Basics and to leave wild animals alone," the Wildlife Commission said.

Six rules to follow for bear safety:

1. Never feed or approach bears. Feeding bears teaches them to look for more food by approaching homes and people. Don't risk your safety and theirs.

2. Secure food, garbage, and recycling. The odors attract bears. Don't reward them with easily available food, liquids, or garbage.

3. Remove bird feeders when bears are active. Birdseed and grains have a lot of calories, making this meal very attractive to bears.

4. Never leave pet food outdoors. Feed pets inside when possible. If you must feed pets outside, do single portions and remove food and bowls after feeding.

5. Clean and store grills and smokers. Make sure all grease, fat, and food particles are removed so it doesn't attract bears.

6. Alert neighbors to bear activity. If you see bears in the area, tell your neighbors and share tips on how to avoid encounters.
