CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Four North Carolina cities are among the best places in the U.S. for veterans to live, according to new analysis from WalletHub.
Raleigh came in No. 1 overall, receiving high marks for its economy and employment rate for veterans. Raleigh also scored well when it comes to quality of life. Raleigh also had the fewest homeless veterans population per capita, according to researchers.
Charlotte made the list, too, coming in at No. 26 nationally. Charlotte's best score was employment, followed by quality of life and the economy. Durham (35) and Greensboro (48) also made the top 50. Winston-Salem was just outside the top 50 at 51 overall.
WalletHub compared the 100 largest U.S. cities across 19 metrics, ranging from the share of military skill-related jobs to housing affordability and VA health facilities.
“Various factors can influence how good or bad a city is for veterans, from the quality of the city’s VA facilities and its retirement-friendliness to the poverty, unemployment and homelessness rates," WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe said. "All cities should prioritize taking care of veterans’ needs, considering how much veterans have sacrificed to serve the country and keep it safe. However, 45% of military members think the U.S. does not care for its veterans financially."
