Federal judge rules Novant Health can buy 2 Iredell County hospitals

The Federal Trade Commission argued the merger would give Novant Health too much control of the health care market.

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Novant Health is getting the green light to buy two Iredell County hospitals, including physician clinic operations and outpatient services.

A federal judge ruled against an attempt to block Novant's acquisition of Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville and Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville. The Federal Trade Commission had argued the deal would give Novant too much control of the health care market. The FTC issued a complaint alleging the $230 million deal could potentially lead to price increases and reduce Novant's incentives to invest in quality care.

"We are thrilled that the federal court recognized the additional benefits Novant Health will bring to the people served by Lake Norman and Davis Regional Medical Centers," Novant Health CEO Carl S. Armato said in a news release. "This outcome is a victory for the area, and our plan to deliver on the commitments we've made begins now."

Novant Health currently owns several hospitals in the Carolinas, including facilities in Charlotte, Huntersville, Matthews, Pineville and Salisbury.
