'You have to have enough in there': Charlotte FC dietician says young athletes usually need to eat more

Eating the right foods can be just as important as practicing regularly.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The new school year is just about here for thousands of families in the Charlotte area and student-athletes are gearing up for the fall sports season.

While practice is crucial for any athlete's success, experts say nutrition could play an even bigger role on the field or court. Alicia Fogarty, a sports dietician for Charlotte FC, says with busy schedules and demanding training regimens, many young athletes struggle to eat the right foods that will help them perform at their best.

"The biggest thing I've found with teen athletes is their busy schedules and busy lifestyles," Fogarty said. "Practice, training, they're always on the go and they never get enough."

Fogarty recommends a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains with regular meals throughout the day. Hydration is also essential for young athletes.

"We have athletes that are using their skills day to day," Fogarty explained. "They need to make sure they have the proper fuel, timed appropriately."

While the concept of healthy eating might seem straightforward, Fogarty said the quality of food young athletes are eating usually isn't the problem. It's the quantity that is typically lacking."

"Especially teen boys," she said. "They want to build muscle, that type of thing. And the biggest thing for them is you have to have enough in there to be able to build muscle."

To maximize performance, parents are encouraged to ensure their kids eat regular meals and are well-hydrated before athletic events.
