CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, a Charlotte woman is forging her own path as an entrepreneur.

Meet a local hair stylist who is also making a difference while showing us a sign of the times with more and more women deciding to go natural.

It's always a good hair day for Serena Woods. The South Carolina native said she always wanted to do something with hair, ever since she was a little girl.

"My dolls always had a haircut soon after I received them, but my dad was a barber," Woods said.

Passion instilled, along with a dream of running her own business Woods set up her one-chair salon in south Charlotte specializing in curls.

"It's been across the board as well, not only Black clients. everyone who has some sort of texture, pattern hair, they're interested in being more natural," Woods said.

Woods, herself, decided to stop chemically treating her own hair more than 20 years ago.

"And there wasn't a lot of resources, there wasn't a lot of education, there wasn't anywhere to go," she said.

But now is a different time. Woods is focusing on a sustainable experience for her clients.

"I think it's partly because just like everybody is interested in organic foods, they're also interested in natural products for their hair," she said.

The curl specialist said with her diverse clientele, it's more than just a shampoo-cut-and-style.

"They all come from different backgrounds. and with that, comes all these different conversations, and I get to learn so much about people from all over the world, just through a hair appointment," she said.

Woods said the best part of running her own business is making her own hours. But at the same time admits, that being a one-woman show is challenging, especially when it comes to setting boundaries.
