CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tens of thousands of people were without power in the Charlotte area as rainy moved through on Sunday.
Over 16,000 power outages were reported in Mecklenburg County on Sunday, according to Duke Energy's outage map.
Over 14,000 of these are reported in south Charlotte east of Pineville. Most of these outages in south Charlotte were restored by 11:45 p.m. on Sunday.
Duke Energy's outage map says the outages were caused by "an object coming into contact with [Duke Energy] power lines." It's unclear at this time what object came into contact with the power lines.
Elsewhere in Charlotte, over 600 outages were reported just north of Uptown. This outage was caused by equipment going offline, according to the outage map. Power was restored in this area around 11 p.m.
Various outages were reported in east Charlotte neighborhoods, with the estimated restoration times around 11 p.m. on Sunday or in the early hours of Monday.
