Over 50 firefighters respond to east Charlotte apartment fire

Officials say no people were injured in the fire, but one family owned five cats that were in the building. Two of the cats survived, and one is still unaccounted for.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An apartment fire broke out Friday afternoon in the 4600 block of Coronado Drive, officials say.

More than 50 firefighters were on the scene.

A witness told NBC Charlotte she went door to door, knocking to make sure nobody was inside. The witness said the flames were visible on the roof. 

People will be displaced from their homes due to the damage.

According to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care & Control Division, there were five cats in the apartment at the time of the fire, owned by one family. 

Two of the cats were transported to the Monroe Road Animal Hospital, two of the cats died as a result of the fire. One cat was still unaccounted for as of 5 p.m. Friday. 

Mecklenburg EMS said they were able to give some of the cats CPR and oxygen.

Officials say no people were injured in the fire. No word yet on the cause of the fire.
