HICKORY, N.C. — The search for a giant, red thumbtack in Hickory took a turn this week when parts of the 40 pound tack were found outside the business.
Hunter Speagle, the owner of ATAC gallery, said someone in a white truck was seen on camera dropping off the pieces -- all except for the tip.
It’s unclear who that person is.
This comes after Speagle said multiple people in what appeared to be a red Jeep Wrangler spent hours putting the tack, which was displayed outside the gallery, on top of their car on March 27. They then drove away, causing part of the piece, worth an estimated $50k, to break off and fall into the road.
In a statement to WCNC Charlotte, Speagle said, “We are surprised and pleased and gratified to announce the return of several pieces to our possession. We anticipate the restoration of the thumbtack, enabling it to continue its narrative journey. While we remain disheartened by its unauthorized removal and damage, we are grateful for the majority of its components being recovered."
Made of foam, cardboard and acrylic, the giant thumbtack has been a staple of the gallery for years, with Speagle taking the piece on the road and hosting pop-up showings alongside his other works of art.
It was used to teach children, including his daughter Opal, about creativity.
"Every day, I looked at it and it made me very happy," Opal Speagle, 7, said. "So, I’m kind of mad that it’s gone, but I’m just glad that we might find it."
The artist says they plan to mend the piece back together with what's left behind following the theft.
"As we await resolution on the responsible party, we, as a family, seek understanding regarding the motive and expect an apology for the incurred damages,” Speagle said.
