Woman dies at hospital after being hit by car in south Charlotte

The woman was not using a crosswalk at the time she was struck, according to CMPD.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman has died after being hit by a vehicle in the 5700 block of Providence Road in south Charlotte near the Gladedale Apartments, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Medic said she was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officials on the scene marked the area with crime tape, and police took pictures of a black car and its windshield.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located a 2008 Nissan Altima, and a pedestrian who had been struck.

The driver has been identified as Eileen Miller, 61. The pedestrian was identified as Rhonda Michelle Cook, 52.

Medic arrived at the scene and transported Cook to Atrium Health's Carolina Medical Center, where she later died.

Both Miller and the passenger in her vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

The major crash unit responded to conduct the investigation.

Based on preliminary investigation, police believe Cook was crossing Providence Road near Old Providence Road when she was struck by the Nissan Altima. Miller had been traveling southbound on Providence Road in the left lane at the time.

Police don't believe speed and impairment were contributing factors for Miller.

The pedestrian was not using a crosswalk at the time she was struck, according to CMPD.

No charges have been filed against the driver at this time.

This is still an active and open investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Crum with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169 Extension 4, or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
