Person killed in Catawba County crash

Four people were hurt and one person was killed in the crash on Friday night.

CONOVER, N.C. — One person died and multiple other people were injured in a crash in Catawba County on Friday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. 

The fatal crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Highland Avenue at Fairgrove Church Road.

 A 2013 Hyundai Sonata traveling south on Fairgrove Church Road ran a red light and was hit by a 2015 Dodge Ram, officials say. 

 The driver of the Hyundai, 24-year-old Mauricio Diaz Gomez of Hickory, died at the scene.

A woman and child who were in the car with him were transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.   

 The driver of the Dodge and a child passenger were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.   

 Officials say no charges will be filed in this case.
