CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Phillip O Berry Academy of Technology was evacuated Thursday due to a fire that started in a classroom, campus officials said.
The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Berry Academy administrators sent a message to parents confirming no one was hurt during the fire. Some students were relocated to another part of the building following the incident.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools shared the following message to parents with WCNC Charlotte:
"This is Principal Branham with important information. The safety and security of our students and staff is our priority. This morning a small fire occurred in a classroom. No students or staff were injured. Out of an abundance of caution the building was evacuated and the Charlotte Fire Department was called to ensure the safety of our students and staff. All students and staff evacuated the school in an orderly manner. We have relocated students from the 600 hallway to another part of the building. These students will have the opportunity to get their belongings and continue classes for the remainder of the day."
CMS responded on Oct. 8 saying the fire started from a Chromebook charger. No other information was released by CMS officials.
