PINEVILLE, N.C. — The town of Pineville is trying to solve an issue many say is long overdue: The need for more power in the area. But the way they’re going about it is seeing some backlash.
ElectriCities of North Carolina went to town officials with a proposal to put a new substation where Miller's Flea Market currently sits. David Lucore, Electric Systems Manager for the company, says this is a necessary move.
“The need is related to the amount of growth taking place in Pineville. And as existing substations become more loaded we’ll need to build more substations and that’s where we are with this one,” he said.
Lucore also said ElectriCities researched possible lots for the new substation. Right now, the decision is between the lot at the flea market and another lot in the area.
“We look for location, proximity to Duke Energy transmission lines, and we also have to consider cost,” he said.
Residents say this is just solving one problem while creating others, chiefly property devaluation and health concerns among others.
“Especially because of where it’s going to be. It’s going to right at the front of the neighborhood. It’s like 'welcome to McCullough with a substation,'” resident Gregory Wagner said.
“It’s really the safety of the kids in the area I’m more concerned with than the property value," said resident Mitch Dangler. "Money is money but long-term health effects with kids is the much bigger concern.”
Neighbors are waiting for the town council vote to find out if the property will be sold to the company and what they can expect next. The council will meet on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m.
