POLKTON, N.C. — The Polkton Police Department is offering a reward for information after a suspect opened fire on a patrol car at South Piedmont Community College's campus in Anson County.
While heading to a "suspicious person" call around 10 p.m. on Friday, a Polkton officer reported seeing several people walking through the wooded area near the community college entrance.
A car had been stolen in the area, so the officer went to investigate the people, police said. But, when the officer approached, they began to run.
The officer said one of the people had a handgun, prompting a call for backup. The people ran around the building and the officer stepped out of his patrol car.
The police department said the officer was "met with a barrage of gunfire" from one of the subjects and took cover.
The officer did not return fire, according to a spokesperson, who said the officer returned to the vehicle to discover it was hit multiple times with bullets.
"To the shooter, I will not give up until you are in jail for attempted murder of a police officer," a spokesperson for the police department said in a Facebook post, adding that the department is thankful the officer did not get hurt.
