Person dies in east Charlotte crash

The deadly crash happened on North Sharon Amity Road, causing a temporary closure in both directions.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A person has died following a major crash in east Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Saturday.

The deadly crash happened on North Sharon Amity Road and had the area shut down for a time.

The road was closed in both directions and police asked people to avoid the area.

Later in the day, CMPD revealed more details, saying the crash happened just before midnight Friday. The crash involved a 20044 Lexus GX 470 driven by 34-year-old Pravis Lamont Anderson Jr. The crash happened near a Shell gas station, and Anderson was declared dead on the scene.

Preliminary investigation by CMPD indicates Anderson was speeding on North Sharon Amity Road and failed to stop at a red light near the intersection with Central Avenue. He lost control of the car, hitting a curb and the base of a light pole. Anderson apparently wasn't wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the car.

His family has been notified of his death.
