GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A Gaston County man is in jail facing a felony auto larceny charge after holding police at bay for hours and refusing to leave his house.
Ted Campbell, 55, threatened to blow up his house on Mary Avenue using natural gas this morning when officers came to arrest him.
It all started around 4:30 a.m. when police say Campbell stole his mother's car. She reported the car stolen and police issued an arrest warrant.
"He dropped the car up the street at a church," said Captain Mike Lari of the Gastonia Police Department. "When we came to the house he said he wasn't coming out."
Campbell told police he was going "blow up the house."
"We smelled natural gas, so our officers backed off," Lari told NBC Charlotte.
A negotiator spoke with Campbell while both the power and gas where cut off from the house around 9:45 a.m. Campbell came out and was arrested without incident.
