Indian Trail set to host annual Union County Pride Festival

Community members are raising questions about the location and lack of restrictions for the event.

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — The debate continues in Indian Trail with the town getting set to host this year’s Union County Pride Parade. Community members are torn about hosting the event. While some are for it, others are not.

Several community members voiced questions during the latest Indian Trail Town Council Meeting

“The whole pride event is disturbing enough, but the most troubling part of it all is the wellbeing of the children in our area,” One community member said.

Much of the questions center around the lack of age restrictions with the event taking place at Chestnut Square Park.

“My biggest and really only objection to the Union County Pride event at the park this Saturday is the fact that it’s open to all ages," another community member added.

But others in the community are thankful to see the inclusion with this year’s festival.

“We all deserve to have a bit of fairness and happiness," one resident said. "I’m glad that Indian Trail has taken this on it’s very very welcoming.”

“Thank you for recognizing that you don’t have to abandon your faith or your deeply held beliefs to agree that all people’s rights should be protected,” another resident said.

Some parents are planning to avoid Chestnut Square Park altogether this Saturday.

“That's not something [my child] has been exposed to before," Rene Close said. "[The festival] is not appropriate for her because she doesn't understand and I don't want her to get confused.”

Residents are hoping the town allows the community to recognize what’s coming to the park ahead of Saturday's pride festival.

“If they're posting when it's happening, what's happening, the more details, the better," Close said. "So you can be prepared as far as that's something you wanna expose your kids to your family to or not."

No vote was taken by the town council to add restrictions or amend the town’s agreement with Union County Pride. The pride festival is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m.
