Queen's Cup gets ready for race day
15,000 people are expected to fill the grounds for the 20th Anniversary of the event Saturday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It's going to be all about big hats and fast horses this weekend.

Crews are getting the grounds ready at the Queen's Cup Steeplechase. It's one of the biggest steeplechase races, and it's held right in our backyard.

"This is the Charlotte region's own Kentucky Derby a week before the Derby," race founder Bill Price said.

Close to 15,000 people are expected to fill the grounds for the 20th Anniversary of the event Saturday. Despite a dreary forecast, Price expects big crowds rain or shine.

"The tents have been sold out for weeks, so I think when people put out their money, they're going to come no matter what. This place is beautiful no matter what the weather is," he said.

On the professional circuit, Brooklandwood where the Queen's Cup is held, is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging courses. Price said Charlotte area residents are lucky to have the event so close, with fewer people in the crowd than other races. He said the fact that this event is a bit of a "hidden gem," makes the event more enjoyable for those attending.

"The great thing about having it right in your backyard is you are inches away from the racing action and you're only having to share the venue with 15 thousand people whereas at the derby you're with 150 thousand people. So, it's a very exhilarating experience for those who haven't seen race horses racing at a fence at 30 miles per hour," he said.

It's a sport with a heart, as well. The event not only offers a big purse to attract competitive horses and jockeys, but the proceeds go to the Alzheimer's' Association.

"We bring a lot of fun, a little bit of sophistication, and raise a lot of money for local charities, too," Price said.

Last year, the event gave 42,000 dollars to the Alzheimer's Association. This year they hope to donate 50,000.
