CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina is among the top ten states where the gap between the civil engagement of white adults and Black adults is the smallest, according to a report by WalletHub. In South Carolina, the gap is wider, the report found.
There were five metrics WalletHub used to compare the gap in civil engagement:
- The share of single-parent households
- The population on parole
- The share of veterans
- Volunteer rate
- Voter turnout
The report says it sought to analyze whether minorities have fewer opportunities to engage politically and socially.
North Carolina came in at number seven in the ranking of states with the most racial equality within civil engagement. South Carolina ranked much lower at 31.
Across the U.S., about 71% of non-Hispanic White adults are registered to vote compared to 64% of Black adults, WalletHub found.
WalletHub used data from from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Justice Statistics and Corporation for National and Community Service to compile its findings.
