HICKORY, N.C. -- A Hickory man is behind bars, facing charges of kidnapping, rape and assault with a deadly weapon, after a woman told police her boyfriend tied her up and carved the word mine into her stomach with a box cutter.
Keith Alan Campbell, 41, is charged with rape, kidnapping, assault inflicting serious injury, communicating threats and assault on a female.
He is in the Catawba County Jail with no bond.
Police say they've never seen anything quite like this in their years in law enforcement.
The victim, who NewsChannel 36 is not identifying because she is the victim of a sexual assault, said she and Campbell got into an argument around 11:30 Friday night.
She said Campbell had been drinking all day, and became enraged. She said he then tied her hands and assaulted her.
Arrest warrants tell the rest of the chilling story.
The warrant for assault states that Campbell is accused of grabbing the victim out of the chair she was sitting in, pushing on a kitchen counter, striking in the face with his fist.
The warrant for communicating threats states that Campbell told the victim, You're mine. You're not going anywhere. I'll kill you before you go back ... I own you.
The warrant for the other assault charge accuses Campbell of cutting and carving 'mine' on the victim's stomach with a blade. The blade is described as a box blade.
Other warrants said the victim was held against her will and raped.
The victim told NewsChannel 36 she endured the attack and waited for Campbell to pass out, before working her hands free and escaping.
Police said she drove herself to the hospital for help.
I have never seen an assault like this before, said Lt. Scott Hildebrand of the Hickory Police Department.
Neighbors said Campbell sometimes has a temper, but they were still surprised to hear about such serious charges.
He's an easygoing person, said Terry Huffman, who is also Campbell's cousin. I don't how someone could snap like that and do something like that.
In district court Monday, a judge denied Campbell bond.
