CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte firefighters recovered the body of a 79-year-old woman from New York who was reported last month in north Charlotte Monday afternoon, officials confirmed.
The Charlotte Fire Department said its crews were assisting Charlotte-Mecklenburg police in a dive recovery in a creek or pond along Hucks Road Monday afternoon. WCNC Charlotte saw a coroner's van parked in the area as crews were clearing the scene.
CMPD said detectives were following up a lead in the search for Nancy Brown when they found a woman's body in a nearby creek. Her death remains under investigation. The medical examiner's office will determine a cause of death and positively identify the body, CMPD said.
Brown was last seen at her family's home the night of Dec. 8. She was from New York and was visiting for the holidays.
Her friends spoke with WCNC Charlotte's Tradesha Woodard, saying her loss was unexpected and painful.
"We can't get over it. I was positive she was still alive," Gail Wangle, Brown's best friend, said.
Wangle says that Brown will always be in her heart but she wishes she was still around a little longer.
