Kids "stay poor" in Mecklenburg County.
A couple of Harvard economics professors were led to that result, CNN reports. Their study looked at the average income of 26 year olds that came from low-income families.
At that age, the national average income is $26,000. But in places like Baltimore, which ranked last out of the cities surveyed, the average is less than $22,000.
Mecklenburg ranks just above Baltimore City on the list of five toughest counties to escape poverty.
The professors used tax records from 1996 to 2012. DuPage, Ill. was ranked as the the county where low-income children have the best chance to move up in status.
