Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The newest addition to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has been announced: a baby giraffe!
The female calf was born a few days ago, expanding the zoo's giraffe herd even further. She was born around 1:18 p.m. Monday at 5 feet 7 inches tall, 93 pounds after a 15-month pregnancy.
This is the third time the calf's mom, 18-year-old Ginger, has given birth at the zoo.
The "very active, spunky little girl" is not on exhibit yet, but will get her introduction to the rest of the giraffe herd and the public after some monitoring by zoo staff.
A public naming opportunity will also take place next week, so get your names ready!
