ROCK HILL, S.C. — After nearly eight months since the remnants of the failed Carolina Panthers team headquarters and practice facility were demolished, the City of Rock Hill is considering options to determine who, or what is going to take over the land.
It came after disputes over funding the project led to a bitter battle between Panthers owner, David Tepper and officials from both Rock Hill and York County. Construction was halted in 2022 and the project was eventually killed off.
Now the mayor of Rock Hill says the city is looking through offers to determine what will be built on the 245-acre open lot instead.
“We know more of what we don’t want than what we do want," Rock Hill Mayor John Gettys explained. "We don’t want distribution facilities, we don’t want warehousing, we don’t want things that aren’t producing high tax revenues or high paying jobs."
"We want something that brings high-paying jobs -- but we don’t want to restrict what that might be and might discourage someone from calling and investing," Gettys continued.
He said the city is looking to have the land split amongst multiple businesses to have a multi-used lot. But right now, they're just being patient.
