Rock Hill PD rolls out new tool for residents

It is user-friendly and updated daily; it's an updated tool to fight crime.

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- It is user-friendly and updated daily; it's an updated tool to fight crime.

The Rock Hill Police Department is urging residents to log on and be more aware of crime in their neighborhoods.

The Crime Mapping software allows anyone to see where crimes occur, what types of crimes, even the times of day they are happening. Just log on to the Police Department's web site.

"Drop and click. Drop and click. Drop and click. Voila! You have the data there," said Officer Mark Bollinger with the Rock Hill Police Department. "If someone sees in their area in the last couple of months there's been a number of car break-ins, then two things: hopefully they will take some preventive measures so they're not a victim, and then B, they'll look out for their neighbors."

Like a meteorologist's severe weather map, hotspots show up alerting police to concentrate patrols.

An area of homes off Mt. Gallant Road is a hotspot for car break-ins over the last several weeks. Neighbor Evette Taylor plans on using the software to keep up with crime trends.

"I think it would definitely help us, definitely help any neighborhood to reduce crime."

The police will even email you when crimes happen around in an area you have interest in.
