Rock Hill city leaders considering limiting short-term vacation rentals

If it does go through, there would at least be time to adjust.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Rock Hill city leaders are moving toward limiting short-term vacation rentals, like Airbnb and Vrbo properties.

City leaders want to keep them out of neighborhoods and push them into downtown areas instead.

Some neighbors say they don't want short-term renters in and out of their neighborhoods. In a meeting Monday night, property owners of short-term units pushed back, arguing they could be out thousands of dollars.

"33 permit holders have not had any complaints, the only complaints we've had is that we exist -- we don't have any police reports, we don't have any parties.... none of that is accurate," one property owner said.

If it does go through, there would at least be time to adjust. Those who own rental properties in residential areas would have five years before the new rules go into effect.

This isn't an issue isolated to Rock Hill -- it's a trend popping up all across the country, including New York City where a new law took effect in September cracking down on short-term rentals.
