Rock Hill city planning commission greenlights new townhome development

The project has courted pushback from some residents.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — It was a heated discussion for dozens of homeowners living in Rock Hill during Tuesday night's city planning meeting.

"We just want our homes to remain as a quiet area as they are," said a resident at the meeting.

The debate comes after a proposal for retail commercial and about townhomes right across from Northwestern High School. After nearly two hours, city planning commissioners finally voted yes.

"We have to work with developers or work with something worse down the future," said a member of the city planning commission.

The empty plot of land originally had plans for a Walmart neighborhood store, but that never happened. Now after years of sitting vacant, officials are now moving forward with new plans.

As concerns for things like safety, noise, and traffic continue to linger, it's now up to the city council to give the final say next month.

"We feel that the developers, they need to take their plans elsewhere," said another resident.

The plan goes to the city council for a vote on January 8, 2024.
