Rotten tree falls on 8-year-old boy, killing him

The boy was playing outside with his brother when the tree fell on him, firefighters said.

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — An 8-year-old boy died when a rotten tree fell on him in Burke County Monday evening, officials confirmed. 

The incident happened on Sugar Loaf Road, which is southeast of Morganton, just off North Carolina 18. When firefighters arrived, they found the child under the tree. Officials said the tree fell while the boy was playing with his brother.

The child was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

No further information was released by investigators.
