SAFE Charlotte grant applications now being accepted

$1 million is being dedicated to help combat violence in the community.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The city of Charlotte has opened applications for grants as part of the SAFE Charlotte plan, which aims to help the community combat violence.

The city council approved the plan in October 2020 in collaboration with community leaders and city departments. Part of the recommendation included dedicating $1 million to help Charlotte non-profits tackle the issue. The grant will fund program implementation and collaboration between organizations, with the idea that services can be layered to offer holistic support.

Priority attention is being placed to proposals from groups who include evidence-based or informed programs that prevent youth crime, which is timely given a focus on recent violence involving younger members of the community.

Applications opened on Feb. 5 and will close on March 15. The city will announce which groups are grant recipients on May 6, and the contract period for the grants will start July 1. Groups who are interested can also attend an optional review listening set for Feb. 15.
