ROCK HILL, S.C. — As the 2024 presidential primary elections draw closer, all eyes are watching the Palmetto State. Republican hopefuls are making campaign stops throughout South Carolina in attempts to garner the support of voters in the pivotal contest.
Nikki Haley, who is the former governor of South Carolina, held an event at the Magnolia Room in Rock Hill on Sunday.
That event came about a week after former President Donald Trump rallied near Myrtle Beach. In that rally, Trump lobbed insults at Haley.
Haley claims she is the only candidate who can unite the country and highlighted her foreign policy knowledge, having served as Trump’s United Nations ambassador for two years.
During a Monday morning campaign stop in the central South Carolina city of Sumter, home to an Air Force base, Haley bashed her former boss for "siding with a thug." Haley was referring to Vladimir Putin, who she called “a dictator who killed his political opponents.”
Trump is returning to Haley's home state later this week.
The former president will deliver remarks at a "Get Out the Vote Rally" in Rock Hill on Friday.
Recent polling from Winthrop University shows Trump with strong lead over Haley with about 65% of support from likely GOP voters.
A USC professor told WCNC Charlotte Haley will need about 40% of the vote in South Carolina to take home the nomination.
