Lake Norman drowning victim identified

State wildlife officials said the man wasn't wearing a life jacket when he jumped from a sailboat to go swimming in the lake. His body was found hours later.

CORNELIUS, N.C. — North Carolina wildlife officials identified a man who drowned in Lake Norman on Saturday as a 64-year-old from Charlotte.

Multiple crews responded to a report of a missing boater on Lake Norman on Saturday. The incident happened a little after 10 a.m. near markers R1 and R2 off Belle Isle Drive, according to the Cornelius Police Department.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said that 64-year-old Duane Andrew Strong jumped from a moving sailboat to swim in the lake when he began to struggle. Strong, who wasn't wearing a life jacket, went under the water's surface and wasn't seen again. Emergency crews found his body around 6 p.m.

Cornelius Police earlier asked boaters to stay away from the area while the search was ongoing.

"It is crucial to keep the water as calm as possible to ensure our personnel are able to safely conduct their search," a spokesperson for the department said.
