Suspect arrested after shooting outside Concord restaurant

Nijel Hitchcock, 24, was shot outside of Danny's Place and was later found dead after his car crashed near the scene.

CONCORD, N.C. — One man was arrested after shooting a person who later died in a crash.

The shooting happened around 8:45 a.m. on Thursday outside Danny's Place on Church Street, according to the Concord Police Department.

Police say Deamonte Howard, 26, shot Nijel Hitchcock, 24, and then fled the area. Howard was located nearby and arrested.

Hitchcock got into the back of a car after the shooting. The car crashed into another car and a utility pole near the intersection of Church Street and Winecoff Avenue. Hitchcock was pronounced dead at this scene.

Police say that Hitchcock and Howard knew each other and this was not a random act of violence.

Howard is charged with voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held at the Cabarrus County jail with no bond.
