COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina is known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning beaches, but now it' South Carolina is now making waves in different arena: the entertainment industry. As more filmmakers seek incentives to bring their productions to the Palmetto State, the local film scene is experiencing an increase in activity.
"Our consistency and our incentives, track record we have, and knowing how to speak the language as a film commission, we understand what producers need and we can talk to them about that. It gives them a sense of these guys have it together and the state of South Carolina has it together," said Dan Rogers, co-manager of the South Carolina Film Commission.
Rogers, alongside Matt Storm, said South Carolina's incentives have attracted an influx of TV and film producers to the state. "They (film producers) are just looking for different looks and we have a pretty robust financial incentive program that we are able to capitalize on and bring in productions," Storm said.
The statewide incentive programs are a driving force behind the surge in film production. "If they are over a million dollars they would qualify for a rebate. It's a cash back rebate. States like Georgia or Louisiana do tax credit, we do cash back," Storm added.
Right now, TV series such as "Righteous Gemstones" on HBO and "Outer Banks" on Netflix are both filming in South Carolina, providing opportunities for local talent to shine.
"Starting out, get with a reputable agency who you can see their success stories, who you can see they have a drive to help you attain your goals as to where you want to go. And make sure it's a good fit for you," said Ericka DeAbreu, the CEO of the DeAbreu Agency.
DeAbreu said these productions are not only showcasing local talent but also supporting their acting portfolios. "South Carolina is a really small state but I like to say we have great talent here," she said.
As cameras continue to roll against the backdrop of South Carolina's landscapes, the Palmetto State is on the rise in the world of entertainment.
"We are a very film-friendly state. People are, by large, excited to have filming and it brings a new atmosphere to what's going on in a town," Storm said.
