COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina officials announced the state's annual Tax Free Weekend will happen in 2024 on Friday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4.
During that weekend, shoppers will be able to buy eligible products in stores or online without paying the state's regular 6% sales tax.
Tax-free items can be new or used and are eligible no matter the price, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
"As inflation continues to drain many wallets, this year's Tax Free Weekend offers some relief for weary families," Revenue Department Director Hartley Powell said.
Some items that are eligible for Tax Free Weekend
- Computers
- Printers
- School supplies
- Clothing and accessories
- Shoes
- Certain bed and bath items
- Diapers
- Purses
- Earbuds and headphones
“Every shopper saves money during this tax holiday, particularly on back-to-school essentials," Powell said.
Tax Free Weekend first started in 2000, when the South Carolina legislature signed it into law.
Shoppers in The Palmetto State bought $30.4 million in tax-free items during last year's Tax Free Weekend, saving more than $1.8 million in sales tax, the revenue department said.
Items that shoppers still have to pay taxes on over Tax Free Weekend include: digital cameras, smartphones, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches and furniture.
