CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Days after a police officer and a suspect were hurt in a shooting after a traffic stop in south Charlotte, police confirm the suspect has died and the officer has been discharged from the hospital.
The shooting happened Sunday around 7:30 p.m., near the intersection of Arrowood Road and Nations Ford Road, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Police attempted a traffic stop on a person believed to be involved in an assault with a deadly weapon investigation. The suspect was seen with a gun when officers approached, police said, and officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire.
Police did not say who fired the first gunshot, but the police report said its officers "were fired upon."
One officer, identified as Officer Kenneth Kludy, was struck multiple times along with the suspect. Both were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. A second officer who has not been identified was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Kludy has been discharged and is recovering.
The suspect, 37-year-old Nelson Javier Funez Reyes, died at the hospital on Tuesday. His family has been informed.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident. CMPD said Kludy and Officer Joshua Heater were the two officers who fired their weapons. Both have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure.
