Sugar Creek Road crash leaves pedestrian dead, suspect arrested

The crash happened on W Sugar Creek Road near Wilson Lane.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing charges after a pedestrian was hit and killed in northeast Charlotte on Sunday.

The crash happened on W Sugar Creek Road near Wilson Lane around 10 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police say Antonio Harris, 34, was found dead at the scene. Harris was standing in the median when he was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driving the wrong way. 

The driver of the truck, Leonardo Hernandez Perez, 31, did not stop to help Harris after the crash, according to police. 

Hernandez Perez was later arrested and charged with felony death by vehicle, felony hit and run causing death, and reckless driving. He is being held in Mecklenburg County jail with a $100,000 bond. 

This crash remains under investigation by CMPD.
