West Charlotte house fire started on purpose, officials say

The Charlotte Fire Department said one person is in custody for allegedly setting the building on fire and displacing 12 people.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Fire Department said one suspect is in custody after intentionally setting a duplex on fire in west Charlotte Friday night. 

The fire erupted on the 2800 block of Columbus Circle around 9 p.m. Friday night and took about 10 minutes for firefighters to put out.

The American Red Cross is assisting the five adults and seven children who lived in the building, according to the fire department in a statement on Saturday. 

Charlotte Fire investigators determined the fire was set on purpose, according to officials. 

The fire department said it estimates the total property loss to be about $30K.
