CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte Area Transit System bus driver was shot Monday in what appeared to be a domestic situation, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. near the Transit Center in the 300 block of E. Trade St.
Charlotte City Councilman Braxton Winston tweeted about the incident.
"A @CATSRideTransit bus operator has been shot at the bus station," Winston tweeted. "I am being told she will survive and the suspect has been detained."
CATS warned of possible bus delays in the area because of the ongoing investigation.
The suspect, 57-year-old T.B. Moss, was taken into custody, and a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was found in his possession.
The victim was taken to the hospital. Her condition was not released.
Miranda Mills, a criminal defense attorney, reacted to the shooting.
“Definitely my thoughts and prayers go out to her and to her family,” Mills said. “I’m not sure if there’s anything law enforcement could have done in that situation, domestic violence is a separate issue, but it’s still concerning. “
Mills said she regularly sees violence happening when she walks by the transportation center and wants there to be a greater police presence in the area.
“I’ve seen fights break out right here on the sidewalk before that we’ve had to walk around, people pushed down in the street, it just seems like law enforcement presence could be stronger around here,” Mills said.
In May, there was another shooting at the transportation center. Police said a man was shot in the leg just before 11 a.m.
“I’ve spoken of several of my coworkers who won’t even walk up and down this area; they’ll go a block or two over to walk to the courthouse,” Mills said.
CMPD said they work closely with officers from G4S, a private security company, to keep the area safe. Additionally, CMPD said the suspect in Monday's incident was arrested within minutes because of the work of officers in the area.
Moss was charged with attempted first-degree murder, shooting into occupied property (four counts), possession of a firearm by felon, possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, felony domestic violence protective order violation, discharge a firearm within the city limits (four counts), and resist/delay/obstruct a law enforcement officer.
Police said Moss has a lengthy, violent criminal history including a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and several weapons-related charges.
