Suspects fleeing Charlotte police arrested

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were following a suspect when he stopped his vehicle and ran inside a retirement home.

A driver fleeing police in north Charlotte has been arrested after he and his occupants ran from officers Friday afternoon.

Around 2: 45 p.m., the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department helicopter began following the car after the vehicle drove passed a license plate reader, police told NBC Charlotte. It was not immediately known why the vehicle triggered the alert.

The helicopter was following the car when the occupants jumped out of the car and ran, CMPD said. Officers ran after the suspects before taking them into custody.

Records showed the helicopter had been following the vehicle along roads such as Statesville Ave and La Salle Street just north of Uptown Charlotte before the occupants ran. Police took the suspects into custody in the 2100 block of La Salle Street, which is home to The LaSalle at Lincoln Heights apartment complex.

The LaSalle at Lincoln Heights website describes it as a 60 apartment complex for residents over the age of 55.

It was not immediately known what the suspects were being charged with.

NBC Charlotte is on-scene and will have updates on WCNC and WCNC.com as information becomes available.
