GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A 14-year-old has died after being struck by a vehicle in Gaston County.

The incident happened Friday at South New Hope Road and North Avenue around 7:30 a.m.

Troopers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol said 14-year-old Steven Canipe was trying to cross the street when he was hit by a car.

The teen was heading to Cramerton Middle School when he was struck by the Nissan Altima, according to NCHP.

Trooper JJ Letcavage patrols the area, and says the student was often seen walking to school.

The student lived less than a mile from the school, and chose not to ride the bus.

"I spoke with his parents. Obviously they are grieving because of their son. It is an unthinkable thing to have to deal with," he said.

Canipe was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia. He died by the afternoon.

The district's crisis team responded and additional staff were on campus to help students cope with the loss.

Counselors will be on hand Monday when students return to class.

Letcavage says parents should make sure their child is taking the safest route to school.

Some parents expressed the need for sidewalks and crosswalks leading to the school, or at least asking officials to examine the existing layout leading to the school.

The accident happened just outside April Bianucci's salon and spa.

"It saddens me. I think we probably need to take done action to prevent from this happen ending in the future," she said,

Troopers say initial findings show the driver was not using her cell phone at the time of the crash, and she will likely not be charged.
