THOMASVILLE, N.C. — A teen was struck and killed by a train after his car broke down on Tuesday.
The crash happened at railroad tracks near the intersection of Main Street and Turner Street in Thomasville, North Carolina just before 8 a.m., according to the Thomasville Police Department.
Police say Hunter Gardner, 17, was struck by an Amtrack train traveling north. Investigators say Gardner's car had broken down on Main Street and he walked toward the train tracks to observe a freight train traveling south.
Officials believe Gardner did not hear or see the Amtrak train before the crash.
The Amtrak Carolinian/Piedmont Train 80 left Charlotte at 6:45 a.m. and was headed to New York. The train was traveling at 77 mph at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported on the train.
