CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Medic said a person was pronounced dead after being hit by a train in Charlotte Friday afternoon.
The agency confirmed it happened near the intersection of Cobblestone Glen Drive and Old Concord Road. Details about what exactly led up to the incident weren't immediately available, but Medic did confirm the person's death.
The train involved appears to be Amtrak's 75 Carolinian/Piedmont train en route to Charlotte, and may have impacted a future departure to Raleigh. A live train tracker shows the train stopped on the tracks where the scene was reported.
A spokesperson for Amtrak told WCNC Charlotte that train 75 was traveling from Raleigh to Charlotte at around 4 p.m. "when an individual who was trespassing on the track came into contact with the train."
The spokesperson said there have been no reported injuries to the 116 customers or crew members onboard at the time of the crash.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said officers and Medic located an unresponsive male on the tracks when they responded to a call about a pedestrian struck.
CMPD’s Major Crash Unit, CSS and the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to conduct an investigation.
The initial investigation revealed the man was standing in the southbound tracks on Norfolk Southern property, according to a statement from CMPD.
CMPD said this was not a location where the rail tracks cross a public highway.
Detectives are still working to identify the victim in this case.
Amtrak said it is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.
WCNC has also reached out to Norfolk Southern because the railway is owned by that company.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed Old Concord Road was closed, and advised drivers to seek alternate routes as officers diverted traffic at the time of the incident.
Stay tuned for updates as we get them.
