TSA screens record-breaking 3 million people across the country Friday before Memorial Day

Nearly 3 million passengers were screened – the highest single day number ever.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Friday, May 24 was the busiest day ever at airports across the country with nearly 3 million passengers screened – the highest single-day number ever, TSA confirms.

It surpasses the previous record set on November 26 last year during Thanksgiving travel.

Anticipating more than one million people to travel through the airport until Tuesday, Charlotte Douglas International Airport had additional staff in yellow vests roaming to help people get to where they need to go.

On Memorial Day morning, TSA lines at CLT were long as early as 5 a.m.

"There was a little bit of a line right there, took a little bit, then they opened another person. I’ve been here 15-20 minutes. Pretty easy," said Cynthia Small, who is flying from Charlotte to Las Vegas.

Some people were flying home after the holiday weekend while others were getting an early start on summer travel.

"We’ve had no trouble booking stuff and getting stuff situated," said Mariah Docherty, who is flying to Belize. "So, I think it’s been smooth for me."

Charlotte Airport officials recommend that you get to the airport two hours ahead of your flight time and check with you airline for flight status updates.
